Even when women are considered, it tends to be elite women, who are nevertheless often seen through the eyes of their male counterparts. The editors of this volume have gathered together an outstanding collection of scholars to examine both elite and ordinary women's lives on the Bay of Naples before the eruption of Vesuvius devastated the region of Campania in 79 CE.
