• The radiocarbon dating method has been in use for 20 years. Attempts have been made to check the method against other dating methods and to discuss the causes of disrepancies in the results. No previous conferences had been arranged that had been especially devoted to the complicated problems connected with radiocarbon dating and its geophysical implications, where specialists representing different subjects could gather and penetrate the problems. It was thus essential to arrange a symposium where chemists, physicists, geologists, archaeologists, and geophysicists could meet in a small group for discussions. The Twelfth Nobel Symposium was held from 11 to 15 August 1969, in the Institute of Physics at the University of Uppsala, Sweden.
