- This qualitative study explored the concept of patriarchy as embodied in male acts of aggression, traditional gender roles and religion. This study particularly explored how philosophical paradigms that are clothed in male privilege perpetuate and support male acts of aggression. The purpose of the study was to examine how women experience patriarchy in their everyday lives and how they use their spirituality as a vehicle to navigate, and resist, these societal barriers and injustices. These concepts were explored primarily through the lens of feminist discourse, critical theory (Habermas) and critical spirituality (Dantley). In-depth face-to-face interviews with eleven participants revealed the following: women are constantly challenging social constructions of gender in their homes, workplaces and places of worship; women engage in simultaneous acts of accommodation and resistance in dealing with patriarchal relationships and institutions in their everyday lives; women view themselves as strong, influential first teachers; and lastly, women use their spirituality as a source of strength and power to handle life's adversities.
